Leagues Cup 2024 Announces New Format and Groupings

Reigning Champions Receive Automatic Byes as Tournament Expands

47 MLS and LIGA MX Teams to Compete in Second Edition

The Leagues Cup, an annual soccer competition between clubs from Major League Soccer (MLS) and LIGA MX, has unveiled its new tournament format and group assignments for the 2024 edition. The second edition of the tournament will feature an expanded field of 47 teams, including all top-flight clubs from the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The tournament will begin with a group stage, with the teams divided into 15 groups of three. The top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-place finishers, will advance to the knockout stage. The knockout stage will consist of a single-elimination bracket, with the final scheduled to be played in August.

Reigning LIGA MX champions Club América and reigning MLS Cup champions Columbus Crew have received automatic byes to the Round of 32. All 47 teams will pause their respective league seasons during the summer to compete in the month-long tournament.

The expanded format and the inclusion of all top-flight clubs from the three countries are expected to make the 2024 Leagues Cup one of the most competitive and exciting soccer tournaments in the world.
